Guided tour of the main tower of the fortress with its breathtaking panoramic view
The imposing bulk of the Medici fortress is one of the most distinctive features of Volterra’s skyline; built in 1474, the fortress was commissioned by Lorenzo the Magnificent after Florence conquered the town in the Alum War.
Symbol of the Florentine domination over the centuries, later turned into a jail, the castle has been closed off to the public for a long time. Today the peek of the fortress is exceptionally open to those visitors eager to enjoy a spectacular view over the town and the surrounding landscape reliving the past and the history of a building that still watches over Volterra from its highest point.
