The Toscano Tower
Amongst Volterra’s most interesting towers
IIt’s also one of the oldest towers in the city.
It includes two separate bodies, one that’s older and has a square plan, and one with an L-shaped plan surrounding the first one, making the structure more modern.
We don’t know exactly when the first tower was built, but we know that the second one was built in 1250. This date is known thanks to an inscription on its facade.
There are many architectural differences between the two structures, starting from the openings in the towers. There are less and smaller openings in the older tower and more and bigger ones in the newer one, which shows us the evolution of this kind of buildings throughout the centuries.
The tower can be visited on the inside on specific occasions.
