PONTE DEL DEFIZIO

The Ponte del Defizio

A single stone arch

Not far from the town of Castelnuovo Val di Cecina there are two bridges, one of which is called “del Defizio”. It is a medieval construction: a single stone arch, shaped like a “donkey back”, crosses the Pavone Stream, above it was the narrow roadway protected by a low parapet.
The bridge is composed of other arches built on the east bank that lead to a building that was to be a service building on the bridge. We are not able to determine a precise dating of the bridge, even if for some typological characteristics we can hypothesize it of the XIII century.

The Ponte del Defizio can be admired descending towards the Valle del Pavone.
