PARISH CHURCH OF SAN GIOVANNI BATTISTA A SILLANO

The Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista

An ancient ambience reigns in its remains

The church is located in the municipality of Pomarance, not far away from the “borgo” of San Dalmazio.

It’s one of the most important parish churches of the area, known since 874 a.D.. It was located on an important road axis linking Volterra to the Metalliferous Hills and the city to the mining area under Volterra’s bishop.

Today, only part of the facade of the church is still standing, but its grandeur and decorations show the church’s previous important role and wealth. The remains show us that it was a 3-nave structure, with a raised presbytery and a bell tower. The architectural decorations, specifically the little arcades, remind one of the Norman architecture in Sicily.
