The Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista
In its ruins there are ancient atmospheres
The pieve is situated in the municipality of Pomarance, near the village of San Dalmazio
It is one of the most important churches of the area, dating as far back as 874. It was located on an important road system that joined Volterra with the Metalliferous Hills and it was in particular a connection between the city and the mining area under the control of the bishop of Volterra.
Today only some remains are left of the church, and only the facade is still standing. But from its grandeur and decoration it is still possible to grasp its importance and wealth. From the remains of the structure one can guess that it had three naves, a lifted presbyterium and a bell tower. The architectural decorations, especially the small arches, remind us of the Norman Sicilian architecture.
