THE SAN GIOVANNI BATTISTA CHURCH IN POMARANCE

The San Giovanni Battista Church in Pomarance

decorated with stunning paintings

The church was built in the 12th century in the middle of Pomarance‘s castle. It was then heavily restructured in the 18th and 19th century, which changed its original appearance a lot.
The stone facade still preserves many medieval decorations, especially some animal and plant elements on the capitals, which are a symbol of importance and wealth.

The inside of the church was decorated in 1835 by Luigi Ademolli with scenes from the Old and the New Testament. Some wonderful works of art were kept there, such as the Madonna del Cardellino, from 1300s Sienese School, or the Madonna col Bambino by an unknown artist from the 13th century.
