The San Pietro in Palazzuolo monastery
and its ancient history
This monastery is one of the oldest ones in Tuscany, and visitors can admire its remains just by taking a little walk. It was founded at the beginning of the 1700s and it welcomed monks who were looking for the isolation and spirituality that this remote place still offers today.
The monastery received a big sum of money by a rich family, which allowed it to have control over a big area and become independent from the two dioceses of the area.
Today, only a few parts of the buildings of the monastery are still standing, but it’s easy to imagine the wealth and power it had in the past. The best-conserved remains are the ones of the church, whereas the buildings where the monks used to live are all ruined.
